A day in Geneva

A quick few hours in Geneva whilst waiting for my connecting flight

Okay, so I was warned about the fact that Geneva is one of the most expensive places you can visit. However, I was not expecting a train journey to cost €70!!! I decided to bite the bullet and pay it as I had no other plan for the day apart from getting on this train to visit Chillon Castle.

Transport

This train journey was beautiful and went right along the lake and passed all the snow capped mountains in the background. It took about an hour and 20 minutes to reach Montreux where I then got a bus that cost €3.70 for a return. You could also just walk from here and it would take about half an hour. However, I was on quite a tight schedule to catch my connecting flight. The bus took about 5 minutes and dropped you right outside the castle.

View from the train

Chillon Castle

The castle was beautiful, I just walked around the outside of it but you can pay to go inside if you want to. There are so many great picture spots around the castle to snap the perfect Instagram photo.

Food/Drink

The only cafe/restaurant nearby is the one directly outside the castle and as nice as all the food looked here I would recommend avoiding it due to the price. A bottle of Fanta cost €6!!! (And it wasn’t even the legit Fanta brand). I would suggest buying some food in the supermarket to take for a picnic there as there are many places to sit and eat outside the castle.

Geneva City

After visiting the castle I then got the train back into Geneva where I still had a bit of time to kill before my flight. I took a walk along the front of the lake where there were many beautiful flowers and little gardens to explore.

Jet D’eau

Whilst in the centre of Geneva I googled what I could do in the area. Every website said to visit the Jet D’eau so I headed off and walked to it. I’m not overly sure what the hype was about with this. It is essentially just some water squirting high up in the air on the lake. But I guess it made a nice sound as the water landed. It had also gone cloudy by the time I got here so maybe it would look better when there is blue sky and sun!

Summary

Overall, Geneva is a very very beautiful place to visit. I think it is definitely perfect for a layover as it would be extremely expensive to stay here and buy food/drink for a longer period of time. I actually didn’t end up purchasing any food here, luckily I had some Pringles in my bag from my flight which I ate instead. I would 100% recommend visiting the castle though. There are also areas where you can swim in the lake in Geneva and the water is crystal clear but it was a bit cold whilst I was there (I visited early April).
